2003-08-04 The BN spin begins for the coming general election

In Sarawak, the BN leader, Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, is in absolute and autocratic control for two decades, with no plans to step down. Revolt in the air. There is a move, with UMNO's and Kuala Lumpur's backing, to force him to step down. If he refuses, the other parties in the state BN coalition would leave the coalition, isolating his Parti Pesaka Bumiputra Bersatu (the United Pesaka Bumiputra Party of PBB). Sarawak has been the stranglehold of Tan Sri Abdul Taib and his estranged and now infirm uncle, Tun Abdul Rahman Ya'akob. The state is run as a personal fiefdom, in much the same as the late Tun Datu Mustapha bin Datu Harun once ran Sabah.

2003-01-09 The MCA President Has No More Tales To Spin

Indeed, the Prime Minister soured of Dr Ling in 1988, two years into his MCA presidency, and wanted him to leave. But he stayed on for another 14 years, for no reason than that UMNO and its president then was in turmoil and shock. He cashed in on that, forcing Dr Mahathir to give in to him to save his skin, and at one time negotiating with Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, then the leader of the breakaway UMNO faction, Semangat '46, to openly challenge Dr Mahathir and UMNO. The Sabah BN parties were also brought into the plot, the late Prime Minister, Tengku Abdul Rahman, even persuading the Sarawak chief minister, Dato' Pattingi Abdul Taib Mahmud, to join the new grouping. The MCA even lobbied with the Chinese parties in Sabah and Sarawak. But no one was prepared to bell the cat. The one unpredictable in this plotting was if Dr Mahathir would declare a state of emergency and the ISA to stop them in their tracks. That stopped them in their tracks. When Dr Mahathir had his coronary bypass surgery in 1989, Dr Ling broke ranks and came to his support. Dr Mahathir all but destroyed Semangat '46 when a few days before the general elections, he accused Tengku Razaleigh of wearing a Kadazan headdress with a Christian Cross -- it was not -- but the propaganda worked.

2002-09-28 Leadership by osmosis and the decline of the Malaysian state

The Malaysian Chinese Association president, Dato' Seri Ling Liong Sik, insists he should continue, even after his solemn promise to step down. He changed his mind after Dr Mahathir, who is also Prime Minister and chairman of BN, ordered him to stay on. The Gerakan president, Dato' Seri Lim Kheng Yaik, clings to office on the same BN principle that once elected, he stays on, come hell or highwater, for life. The Parti Pesaka Bumiputra leader, Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, is in office for more than two decades. As has the Parti Bersatu Sabah leader, Dato' Joseph Pairin Kitingan. The opposition parties catch on to this convenient method of remaining in office. Every opposition party leader follows the time-tested BN method for its leader to stay in office unchallenged. The DAP leader, Mr Lim Kit Siang, was until recently its unchallenged leader for more than 30 years. He still exerts considerable influence from behind the scenes as chairman. In Malaysia, political parties exist, especially in BN, so its leaders can hold office for life.
