| 2003-05-13 | Dr M wants to stay on even if no one else wants him to That it is made after Dr Mahathir's firm insistence that
Malaysia is an Islamic state makes this curious indeed. More so
that PAS makes a strong bid to deny, at least, the BN's two-third
majority in Pahang. And this new casino, ten minutes a crow's
flying time away from the Genting Highlands Casino. Originally
Bukit Tinggi was where Putra Jaya, Malaysia's administrative
capital. Lots of people bought land cheap in the area hoping to
make a killing only to lose money on it. But something went
wrong, and it was abandoned. But is it only Tan Sri Jamaluddin
that would be held to task for approving the casino licence? When
the cabinet decides even on municipal issues, could it not have
discussed this casino licence?
|
| 2003-05-11 | The Prime Minister repeats it again: I retire in October But those he enriched so they could get into unrepayable
debt want him to stay on: for without him, their fateful march
into bankruptcy is all but certain. In such large numbers that
Kuala Lumpur could well be Darul Muflis, the land of bankrupts.
Hence this attempt to make him stay. They believe his work is not
done. There is renewed pressure for the lands between Kuala
Lumpur and Jenda Baik in Pahang to be designated Federal
Territory so the Genting Highlands and Bukit Tinggi casinos would
be out of reach of the Pahang state government should, as many
fear in Kuala Lumpur, PAS deny the BN its two-thirds majority in
the state, or God forbid, capture the state, when deals of this
type could not pass muster. The days when constitutional
amendments could be enacted to protect UMNO and BN are long over.
|
| 2003-05-06 | Pahang Darul Kasino Dow Jones newswire adds: "Bukit Tinggi resort is unlikely to
launch launch Tropicale Gaming in a blaze of publicity, given the
sensitivities surrounding gambling in the Islamic country." It is
more than that. Dr Mahathir insist Malaysia is an Islamic state,
believes his assertion overrides the constitution and refuses to
have it debated in Parliament. But so asserted, the BN government
would be held to a stricter code of governance, in which such
issues as gambling would fall in with Islamic restrictions on it.

| 2003-05-03 | Who issued Pahang's second casino licence? NO ONE IN THE NATIONAL FRONT (BN) wants the credit for Pahang's
second casino, which Malaysia's super-crony opens this month at
his Bukit Tinggi Colmer Tropicale resort. The Prime Minister,
Dato' Seri Mahathir Mohamed, keeps quiet. So the deputy prime
minister, Dato' Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi; the Pahang mentri
besar, Dato' Seri Adnan Yaakub; the second finance minister,
Dato' Seri Jamaluddin Jarjis; the cabinet ministers from Pahang;
the government's adviser on Islamic affairs, Dato' Seri Abdul
Hamid Othman; the minister in charge of Islamic affairs, Dato'
Seri Abdul Hamid Zainal Abidin. Yet, two months ago, Tan Sri
Vincent Tan was cock-a-hoop about it, and issues confident
statements about it, but whose statements are carried only in the
foreign media. His office says the casino will be open from this
month.
|
| 2003-05-02 | A supercrony is allowed to operate Pahang' second casino THE GOVERNMENT OF PRIME MINISTER, DATO' Seri Mahathir Mohamed,
taunts the Islamic constituency and its own perception of
Malaysia as an Islamic country to issue a controversial casino
licence to a super crony, Tan Sri Vincent Tan. The government has
not announced it, but Tan Sri Vincent Tan, a self-proclaimed
international business man of unquestioned repute who hesitates
not to sue any who would not accept his view of himself, is
cock-a-hoop at being allowed to operate a casino at his
money-losing, privately-owned Colmer Tropicale resort in Bukit Tinggi, Pahang state, outside Kuala Lumpur. It opens this month.
With 250 electronic, or computerised machines featuring such
gambling games as baccarat and roulette. It is a minnow compared
to Genting Highlands casino, but it is money-spinner from the day
it opens. No casino in the Far East has lost money. If he had not
been allowed to, his Colmer Tropicale resort would have gone the
way of the nearby Mimaland resort, which collapsed spectacularly
in the 1980s when it could not get the gaming licences needed to
attract custom.
