Forty thousand Malaysians turned up at the prime minister's Hari
Raya Open House; thirty thousand at the new deputy prime
minister's; fifteen thousand at the ousted deputy prime minister's.
The only certainty in these figures is the exaggeration. It is
inconceivable that 40,000 could have packed into Seri Perdana at the
rate of 4,000 an hour -- assuming each visitor spend about 30
minutes before leaving for home. The same arguments hold true for
the visits at Dato' Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's and Dato' Seri
Anwar Ibrahim's. But we have a honourable tradition of exaggerating
figures. The millionth visitor to an exhibition at Muzium Negara
was given goodies worth tens of thousands of ringgit. The only
problem here was that if visitors had entered the muzium ten abreast
and walking straight out, the million visitors could not have been
reached even if the muzium was open round the clock.
