1998-01-27 Frogs Under the Coconut Shell

Why do we, as a nation, behave like frogs under a coconut shell? The US ambassador, Mr John R. Malott, whose knowledge in these matters is at best suspect, comes out assertively yesterday with a gobbledygooky statement of Malaysia regaining investor confidence, and the New Straits Times is on hand to give it front page play. A few weeks ago, the IMF's M. Michael Camdessus, came here and we believed his statements on how well the Malaysian economy looked, ignoring that under the circumstances, a guest is unlikely to irritate the host. But look through yesterday's, or any other day's, copy of the New Bolehland Times and, indeed, any other, in vain, for an understanting of news of what happens in the region. Like the proverbial frog, Bolehland is only concerned with itself, the rest of the world had better adapt to us.

1997-10-06 Sarawak: The Chief Minister's secret search for haze experts

But he left secretly. And he returned secretly. And as the New Straits Times report said this morning: Taib left the state with his family. Accusing the DAP leader, Mr Lim Kit Siang, of ignorance for alleging that he had "run away" from the state and and that the DAP did not have capable leaders in the state does not address the question: If his trip was for laudable state reasons, why was this visit kept hidden when those in the state was looking for any scrap of information that would lift the gloorm? Why did he leave, and return, secretly? Or is this search for experts the gloss for his dereliction of duty to the state?

1997-09-30 The haze and the Commonwealth Games

There is 346 days before the Commonwealth Games begins in Kuala Lumpur. The Sukom Ninety Eight Berhad, which organises the Games, remains touchy at criticism of its organisation, attacking a reporter in a letter in the New Straits Times today (30 Sept) for suggesting that the money is not well spent. We still do not know if the facilities are up to mark. There is much huff and puff, but details are lacking. But given the way we spint at the last minute, all this would fall into place.
