| 1997-08-06 | MIC and the Indian community: Building castles and elevated highways For Dato' Seri Samy Vellu, it is more important that he
remains at the helm of the party. His view is not any different
from his predecessors. Mr K.L. Devasar held on to his presidency
of the MIC in the 1940s and 1950s until a young University
graduate from Annamalai University, V.T. Sambanthan, challenged him
and took over the party. In 1974, he felt he had earned a ticket
for life, and had to be gently eased out. The man who succeded
him, Tan Sri V. Manickavasagam, did not live enough to ensure his
control; on his death in 1978, Dato' Seri Samy Vellu takes over,
and has remained since. And would until some one with more
gumption and political savvy ousts him. So, it goes on.

| 1997-07-26 | Bakun "no row" row: Government may step in, Says Moggie The news from Sarawak is hedged by rumours. The most
recurring one is that the project is delayed by two years; that
instead of coming onstream in 2003, it would now be 2005. Another
is that another Tan Sri would take over as chairman of the Bakun
Hydroelectric Dam project. Fourth, that Renong or another company
of that size would take a more active role in the Bakun project.
Fifth, that the present Bakun Hydroelectric Dam is scheduled to
receive a Doctorate of Philosophy from a University in the United
States. Mysterious are the ways of Bolehland.
