Main : Help on Entering Free Ringtone Key Press Code

Entering Ringtones into cell phone

If you have a Nokia or Motorola Phone you can just enter the keypress code directly into your phone's composer.

For all other makes and models try downloading the trial version of Ringtone Converter Software. Then all you need to do is copy the RTTL code for your chosen ringtone and it will convert it into a keypress sequence for your phone.

Nokia music key layout

You'll probably need to refer to the diagram on right hand side for the key-pad.
  • Enter the desired notes. For example, press [4] for note f.
  • To adjust the characteristics of the note, do as follows:
  • Note duration: [8] shortens (-) and [9] lengthens (+) the duration of the note or rest.
  • The default duration is 1/4. The duration is shown in front of the note,
  • e.g. 16d denotes a note d with duration 1/16.
  • Pressing and holding a note key lengthens the note by half, indicated by a dot after the duration, e.g. 8.a.
  • Octave: [*] sets the octave for new notes.
  • The octave is shown as a number after the note (e.g. e1).
  • Rest: [0] inserts a rest (i.e. pause) of the same duration as the previous note.
  • The default duration of a rest is one quarter note (1/4).
  • The rest is indicated by the - character.
  • Pitch: [#] makes the note sharp (indicated by # in front of the note), e.g. #f.
  • The pitch selection is not available for notes e and b.

    Understanding RTTL

    It is best to undestand by example:
    RTTTL

    songname : defaults : duration note octave combinations
                   |             |
    final-countdown:d=4,o=5,b=125:p,8p,16b,16a,b,e,p,8p,16c6,16b,8c6,8b,a,p,8p,

                    |   |   |                            |
                    |   |   |                             -- 16 duration code
            d=duration  |  b=tempo                            c note code
                        | (aka beats per min or bpm) 6 octave code
                      o=octave

    duration codes:                   octave code:

    1 = full note (1/1)               5 =  440 Hz
    2 = half note (1/2)               6 =  880 Hz
    4 = quarter note (1/4) **         7 = 1.76 KHz
    8 = eighth note (1/8)             8 = 3.52 KHz
    16 = sixteenth note (1/16)
    32 = Thitry-second note (1/32)

    (1/4)**  is the default duration
    1        is the default octave

    Understanding the Composer Code

    Tempo: 125
    Title: final countdown ringtone

    Nokia Composer Code
    4-, 8-, 16b1, 16a1, 4b1, 4e1, 4-, 8-, 16c2, 16b1, 8c2, 8b1, 4a1, 4-, 8-, 16c2, 16b1, 4c2, 4e1, 4-, 8-, 16a1, 16g1, 8a1, 8g1, 8#f1, 8a1, 4.g1, 16#f1, 16g1, 4.a1, 16g1, 16a1, 8b1, 8a1, 8g1, 8#f1, 4e1, 4c2, 2.b1, 16b1, 16c2, 16b1, 16a1, 1b1

    The composer code is generally in duration-note-octave format separated by commas or spaces for easy reading.

    Keypress is required whenever there is a change in duration or octave.

    Change Octave by keypress * repeatedly. It will change to the next value (1-2-3-1-2-3) etc

    duration note octave format - these are separated by commas or spaces for easy reading.
        4 - - here octave is not specified since silence has no octave!
        8       -                    - ditto and duration=8 means 1/8 note duration
       16       b      1             - duration is 1/16 , note is b (keypress 7) and octave=1
       16       a      1             - duration is 1/16 , note is a (keypress 6) and octave=1
        4       b      1             -             1/4            b           7             1
        4       e      1             -             1/4            e           3             1

  • The 1st note: 4- the note is a pause so keypress 0 duration is 4 (1/4) is default duration - so no need to keypress anything
  • The 2nd note: 8- the note is a pause so keypress 0 duration is 8 we must decrease current duration - so keypress 8
  • The 3rd note: 16b1 the note is 'b' so keypress 7 duration is 16 we must decrease twice - so keypress 8, keypress 8 octave is 1 octave 1 is default - so keypress not required
  • The 4th note: 16a1 the note is 'a' so keypress 6 duration is 16 no need to change duration octave is 1 no need to change octave
  • The 5th note: 4b1 the note is 'b' so keypress 7 duration is 4 we must increase current duration in 2 steps - so keypress 9, keypress 9 octave is 1 no need to change octave
  • The 6th note: 4e1 the note is 'e' so keypress 3 duration is 4 unchanged - so no keypress octave is 1 unchanged - so no keypress
  • The 7th note: 4- the note is 'pause' so keypress 0 duration is 4 unchanged - so no keypress octave is 1 unchanged - so no keypress
  • The 8th note: 8- the note is 'pause' so keypress 0 duration is 8 decrease duration - so keypress 8 octave is 1 unchanged - so no keypress
  • The 9th note: 16c2 the note is 'c' so keypress 1 duration is 16 decrease default duration twice - so keypress 8, keypress 8 octave is 2 octave has changed - so keypress *
  • The 10th note: 16b1 the note is 'b' so keypress 7 duration is 16 unchanged - no keypress octave is 1 octave has changed - so keypress *, keypress * (the 1st * set 2 to 3, the 2nd * set 3 to 1)
  • the 11th note: 8c2 the note is 'c' so keypress 1 duration is 8 increase duration - so keypress 9 octave is 2 octave has changed - so keypress *
  • How do I enter the tones into Nokia phones

    1. The composer codes are meant for Nokia phone models which has a built-in tone composer. (eg. 3210, 3310, 3330 & 5210 )
    2. For other Nokia models - Please look at Tones Menu or
      Profiles : Personalise : Compose Menu or
      Settings : Tone Settings menu.
    3. If you don't have a composer, then you can buy a data cable to hook your phone to your PC and use software like Logomanager to transfer ringtones. In the future this can be done wirelessly via blue-tooth, infra-red or even wi-fi. If the phone has GPRS - you just need to point the phone browser to the url containing the tones (eg the midi file)
